Leura House, built in the 1880s, is considered to be the first house constructed in the enchanting town of Leura. It served as a private home turned guesthouse, and was the epitome of hospitality, until after World War II. Leura House then found a new purpose in 1951 when it served as a nunnery known as Our Lady of the Sacred Heart with a convent attached to it.
On December 2nd, 1957, a devastating bushfire swept through Leura, threatening to consume everything in its path. Miraculously, the fire halted at the foot of three outdoor statues of “Our Lady of Mary” scattered throughout the garden, leaving Leura House unscathed and people stunned. Meanwhile, the school next to the nunnery and the nearby guesthouse, Chateau Napier, were not as fortunate.
Today, the original altar stands as a cherished relic, displayed as a centerpiece at Leura House inviting guests to marvel at its timeless beauty. The enchanting garden of Leura House is home to the three iconic statues of “Our Lady of Mary,” which have become a symbol of hope amidst the ashes of the past.
